Blue False Indigo

3 Jan

Baptisia, commonly known as Blue False Indigo is the 2010 Perennial Plant of the Year.   I planted 3 gallon plants in my gardens last year and they did quite well.  They have showy flowers on tapering stalks 12′ above mounds of blue green leaves.  Black seed pods add winter interest.  I am anxious to see their growth over the winter and get a full flowering season.  Have not seen them in many gardens, so this would be definitely something of interest and they tolerate the full sun to some shade as well as average soil conditions, and average to below average water usage.  Another great quality of this plant is that it is touted to be both deer and rabbit resistant.  They do need a little room to spread out with 24′ to 36″ spacing.  These should be pretty easy to find this season at a quality garden center.  Happy January Gardening!
